Cybernetic life didn't live up to the marketing buzz. The thoughts inside their organic replacement brains seemed as real to their owners as their original memories. Their emotions, however, were very different. When asked, as she often was, "What's it like to be a cyborg," Alana would either sanguinely reply that it was better than the alternative, or snidely offer to give the questioner the opportunity to find out. Thirty-five years ago, Detective Alana Graves was killed by a terrorist's car bomb. Two weeks later, the police paid for her resurrection as a cyborg—a process euphemistically called, "retirement." In the intervening years, she rose to the rank of Detective Chief Inspector, despite constantly bumping into an invisible "silicon ceiling" of cyber-discrimination. Alana took well to police work, immersing herself in her career. The dangers were of little concern, as she could be resurrected again, as long as she remained on the good side of the law. However, when her close friend and long-time assistant, Detective Benjamin Rhys, is killed in the line of duty and then denied the same cybernetic retirement benefit she had enjoyed for decades, something inside her ostensibly calm exterior snaps.

These two books are very well-written. Interesting plots, full of action, with twists. The spelling/punctuation/grammar are fine, which is a rarity anymore...I note that a basic premise is that the Brits have finally conquered the USA and taken over. You can tell because things are run by a Parliament (instead of our Senate/House of Representatives); the cops have English job-titles; and you no longer have American rights, such as trial by citizen jury - instead you get a government-appointed panel of judges.

Retiree Volume 1 John Douglas Powers Books Reviews
Well paced and imaginative story. Likeable and well rounded characters. Pretty good treatment of a difficult and convoluted plot line. Sequel please!
This is a cool story well told. An interesting world, a crafty plot with enough to keep me wondering and a very satisfying conclusion. I suspect I'll re-read it in the not too distant. Thanks for a cool book!
this book has a interesting plot and is fast paced. it will keep you up at night reading so you can finish.hope Mr. Powers writes more on this
If you have seen the Ghost in the Shell - Stand Alone Complex TV Series this book will seem very familiar, as the world and characters are similar. The main character Alana Graves reminds me of Major Kusanagi and her sidekick Brett reminds me of Togusa, but they work for the police department instead of Security Division (which sounds like it may be an analog of Section 9 in GITS). A good read if you liked GITS.
This story was pretty good. The world is well fleshed out and interesting.
The sci-fi concepts are interesting.
But I found the characters didn't really pull you in.
It's part of a genre I think of as very technical sci-fi that focuses on the science and the world rather than the characters.
Not as bad as some books do though.
It's worth a read.
Pretty good, feels like a starting effort for this author. Some of the dialogue is a bit off at times because of it. Did some pretty good an unexpected twists on the "retiree" idea that were interesting and made some good plot twists as well.
Action stuff is not hugely "there" quite a bit of a crime story more than anything else.
It all starts with a concept that will make you smile and nod as you get into the story, then the thrill ride begins as you fall in love with the characters, gadgets and future that's a unique blend of dystopia and utopia--depending on who you are and what you do in Powers' world.
Powers' 'Retiree' goes way beyond characters and action you love. He creates a setting that is both fantastical and believable at the same time. The imagery is clear, the characters are multi-dimensional, and the settings are a delightful mix of 'Robocop', 'Bladerunner' and 'Almost Human' combined with any James Patterson or Jeffrey Deaver story thrown in for good measure.
You'll love the excitement and the crafty detective work. You'll love the believable future he's created. And you will especially love the humor and heart and genuinely good time. I am SO looking forward to 2.0!
